Composting is controled decomposition of organic matter. Nature is continually composting leaves, twigs and grasses. When we compost we are just doing the same but our object is to hurry the process along so we can utilize the rotted matterial to add humus to the soil in our yards or gardens.
How to build your own compost…
Building your own compost is one way you may change your yard debris into healthy organic matter that may be utilized to enrich and condition your soil. This may reduce the cost associated with waste removal and soil conditioners. Composting will also reduce the amount of litter needing to go to a recycle station or landfill.
Most yard litter can be utilized to make compost, this includes leaves, plant stalks, weeds, twigs and other woody plant trimmings as well as lawn clippings. Other things that you may also compost are straw and
livestock manure.
From within the home you can also use all vegetable peals and trimmings, coffee grounds, tea bags and leftover vegetables.
There are various vegetative materials you should not attempt to compost. They will promote plant disease, attract unwanted insects such as flies, yellow jackets and ants. They may also create offensive odors.
Listed non-recommended things: Meats, fish, poultry, dairy products any foods that contain animal fats, feces (human/pet). Plants that may be infected with disease or are very prone to diseases and weeds that are mature and have produced seeds should not be added to the pile.
There some materials things that should be utilized sparingly these include wood ashes (high quantity of Lime), Sawdust and wood chips (bind nitrogen, if utilized extra nitrogen should be added). Plants that have been treated with chemical pesticides or herbicides (these can require extensive time to decompose).
Newspaper, Breaks down slowly, ideally should be shredded and you should add no more than 10% of the total pile by weight.
